A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the head of state.
The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an rapid pace, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national projects.
