Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of access tunnels leading to the facility... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he commented. "They were part of thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
