Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a demand for the addition of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge game development, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
